SELLING the last Chevrolet Camaro Supercar in Triple Eight’s possession to Garry Rogers Motorsport was more than just another business transaction for Jamie Whincup.

News broke during the week that GRM will return to the championship in a one-off, at least for now, at the 2026 Repco Bathurst 1000 fielding a wildcard entry for veteran James Moffat and debutant Nathan Herne.

The effort will come aboard the car shared by Craig Lowndes and Zach Bates in the 2025 Great Race.

Triple Eight had for some time been eager to find a buyer for chassis 888A-068, and an opportunity came up when GRM’s hopes to lease a Camaro from Erebus Motorsport hit a snag.

Enter Whincup, who made his Supercars debut with GRM only to be sacked after a disappointing 2003 rookie season.

Fast forward 23 years and GRM director Barry Rogers was heaping praise on Whincup’s dealings to facilitate their return to the grid.

Asked if it was special in any way for him, Whincup concurred.

“One hundred percent there was that extra factor there, no doubt,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“Like of course, I’m the CEO of Triple Eight and we needed to sell a car, but there’s a personal element where they gave me a start in the sport.

“You should always have good customer service with any customer, but of course I’m going to add a little bit extra for GRM and make sure that customer service is A1 because of the respect they’ve shown me over the years.

“It’s been publicised as a negative and I got sacked, the whole lot, but really at the end of the day, let’s go right back to the start: I was a Formula Ford kid and I got an opportunity to drive a Supercar.

“Really, it’s an awesome story, them getting back to Bathurst a year after the great Garry Rogers passed away, so we’ll make sure they’ve got a really good car and hopefully they have plenty of fun and get a result.”

Triple Eight’s other 2025 Camaro Supercars are privately owned, with the Will Brown title winner belonging to Earl Evans and Steve Blackmore, and the ex-Broc Feeney car now in the hands of Peter Xiberras.

The Banyo operation now runs Fords and is indeed the Blue Oval’s homologation team and engine supplier.
