ROANOKE, Va. – Troy Daniels’ Dream Big Weekend continued Saturday as hundreds of young athletes took to the basketball court at Summit Sportsplex for the eighth annual Dream Big Basketball Camp, an event focused on teaching the game while inspiring the next generation.
Campers spent the day developing their basketball skills through drills emphasizing fundamentals, ball handling, shooting and teamwork. The camp is part of Daniels’ expanded Dream Big Weekend, which began with a golf invitational and concludes Sunday with the camp’s third and final session.
This year marked the first time the basketball camp has been held at Summit Sportsplex, a partnership Daniels said has helped elevate the event and strengthen its connection to the Roanoke community.
“The Summit Sports Complex has been amazing, honestly,” Daniels said. “They’ve opened up the gym for us to be able to use at any time. Kevin [Connelly] is a very good friend of mine, and I recently met him a few months ago, and he’s really helped me tremendously.”
Daniels said the facility’s commitment to serving young people made the partnership a natural fit.
“I think this facility is really open to the community if anybody’s helping the youth,” Daniels said. “So it’s great. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, so to be able to partner with them, it was a no-brainer.”
Beyond teaching basketball, Daniels said his goal is to make a personal impact by spending time with campers and encouraging them both on and off the court.
“It’s important for me to show face, first and foremost, to be here, give them my time,” Daniels said. “But also just see them have fun in this atmosphere and learn how to work together as a team, play this great game of basketball.”
Dream Big Weekend wraps up Sunday with the third and final session of the basketball camp.
