The reigning champion Dodgers are adding arguably the best pitcher in baseball to their rotation as they acquire Tarik Skubal less than 48 hours before the trade deadline. The Tigers’ ace and back-to-back Cy Young winner was easily the top candidate on the trade market and the best team in baseball got him for outfielder Zyhir Hope and pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
The 2026 deadline, set for Monday at 6 p.m., had been slowly heating up until the Dodgers lit it all on fire. The Braves acquired outfielder Lane Thomas and reliever Bailey Falter from the Royals earlier Saturday night, while the White Sox bolstered their rotation with Luis Castillo in a trade with the Mariners.
The Red Sox acquired Curtis Mead in a trade with the Nationals for Connelly Early earlier in the week, only to lose Mead to injury almost immediately. The Twins, meanwhile, picked up reliever A.J. Minter from the Mets and starter Dean Kremer from the Orioles, while the Yankees sent Camilo Doval to the Pirates on Saturday.
Much of that is because the muddled standings, both in divisions and the wild-card races, mean almost every team is a buyer and the obvious sellers (the Mets, Cardinals, Giants, Angels and a few others) have all the leverage. They don’t have to jump on a deal if they think there’s something better out there.
