Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife Cherelle, saying their marriage is “irretrievably broken”.
The WNBA star filed for divorce on Thursday, July 30; the couple have been married since June 2018.
Court documents said the couple have been separated since July 24, 2026.
The pair met when they were students at Baylor University and share a two-year-old son, Bash.

Speaking about when Bash was born, Brittney said, “As soon as you see them, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. That’s literally what happened.”
Cherelle, who is an attorney, was an advocate for Brittney after she was detained and imprisoned in Russia in February 2022.
Vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were found in her bag, and Brittney was charged with smuggling “narcotic drugs” into the country.
Brittney had played basketball in Russia during the off-season since 2014 and received a 9-year sentence and was given a fine of one million rubles (US$16,300).
Four months after she was sentenced, she was released from Russian prison and returned to the United States in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout.
