PLYRS UNTD, the commercial brand of the NBA Players Association, has opened a year-round performance center in a former Clippers practice facility, giving players a union-operated alternative to team practice facilities.
Though the NBPA declined to disclose financial terms, Exec Dir David Kelly described the project as one of the union’s most significant investments in player services. The facility is being operated under a lease with an option to buy from the current owners, the Sterling family. Kelly said he expects the NBPA to exercise after evaluating operations during its first several months.
The 42,500-square-foot facility includes two NBA-specification courts, a full athletic training room, weight room, indoor and outdoor turf areas, recovery amenities including a sauna, steam room, massage room and meditation pod, family space and conference rooms.
An onsite culinary program provides meals, snacks and nutrition education. Five full-time NBPA employees and roughly 15-20 outside vendors and interns will operate the facility.
The PLYRS UNTD Performance Center in Playa Vista includes two full-size NBA courts, a full athletic training room, a player-designed weight room, indoor and outdoor turf, and a recovery wing with sauna, steam, dry float, massage room and meditation pod, plus a family room, meeting spaces and an onsite culinary program for pre- and post-workout nutrition. NBPA and PLYRS UNTD
The NBPA effort is not without precedent in player unions. During the MLB lockout in early 2022, the MLBPA organized a fully staffed training site at Bell Bank Park in Mesa, Arizona, giving players a dedicated place to work out while they were barred from club facilities.
“We are here to negotiate and enforce the CBA. We also are here to provide services to our members,” Kelly said. “We want to be inside of the area of helping players prepare for their on-court performance, and that’s what this is.”
The NBPA and PLYRS UNTD facility will be anchored by Tide Osifeso, who was promoted into a director-level role overseeing basketball operations, on-court activity and scheduling at the facility. Keith Sainten, the NBPA’s director of facilities operations, will manage the building and day-to-day operations.
PLYRS UNTD and the NBPA are positioning the Playa Vista site as an expansion of a model the union has been testing through its N.Y. headquarters and The Sanctuary, a performance retreat in Andalucía, Spain, where the NBPA has been piloting union-run training and recovery facilities. Kelly said the facility is intended to give players access to services and infrastructure that typically live inside team practice sites without requiring them to go through their employers, framing it as part of a broader effort to move beyond simply bargaining into year-round player services.
Backed by a “significant” NBPA investment, the Los Angeles site extends the union’s New York and Spain projects into a full-scale performance hub in the league’s busiest offseason market. NBPA and PLYRS UNTD
Before committing to L.A., the union studied where players spend their offseasons and found that roughly 200 active NBA players were in the L.A, market last summer. That density, combined with the presence of the Lakers and Clippers during the season, made L.A. and N.Y. the only locations that met the threshold for a full-time NBPA-operated performance center.
Over 60 players contributed feedback on the facility, including Chet Holmgren, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul and NBPA President Fred VanVleet. During All-Star Weekend in L.A., before the building was renovated, the union operated the space in a temporary state and put up a large board divided by category, asking players to write down what they needed. Kelly said the NBPA targeted about 100 players to use facility by the end of August, but with roughly 80 players coming through in the first two weeks of the soft launch, he now expects that number to be significantly higher.
The facility was renovated with input from more than 60 players and will be staffed by NBPA personnel and third-party vendors, NBPA and PLYRS UNTD
PLYRS UNTD will also organize twice-weekly NBA-only runs at the facility during the peak offseason window, with about 25 players expected in some sessions ranging from All-Stars to rotation players. Looking ahead, NBPA chief player experience officer Matteo Zuretti said the union sees potential to use the space for next-generation programming, such as elite youth events and life-skills camps tied to the NBPA’s existing youth portfolio.
N.Y. and L.A. are likely to remain the only full-time NBPA-operated centers for now, but Kelly and Zuretti both think there is a possibility the NBPA may explore expanding the model through additional performance retreats or partnerships with third-party facilities in other offseason hubs if the L.A. facility performs as expected.
“I wouldn’t exclude that this could have or has the legs to become more than just the facilities in New York and in LA. I think we don’t want to limit ourselves,” Zuretti said. “But we want to get this right. There’s a lot of work that was poured into this.”

this episode of On Stage, Garth Knutson, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Aflac, joins SBJ staff writer Mollie Cahillane for a conversation at the Brand Innovation Summit on June 11, 2025, in Chicago. Knutson explains how Aflac is leveraging sports not just as a sponsorship platform, but as a cultural amplifier—investing in women’s sports through the company’s “Parquet Pivot,” building authentic partnerships with icons like Coach Dawn Staley, and tapping into cultural moments like Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders’ influence. \n\nKey themes include: \n- Sports as Marketing Engine: Why sports delivers unmatched reach and trust for Aflac’s brand message. \n- Women’s Sports Momentum: How Aflac sees women’s basketball as both an impact opportunity and a smart business play. \n- Brand & Culture Intersection: Lessons on connecting with fans by leaning into authentic stories and cultural relevance. \n- Practical Takeaways for Marketers: How other brands can think bigger about aligning with athletes, teams, and movements. \nIt’s a case study in bold brand marketing at the intersection of sports, culture, and business.
