Robert Ray Gallery of Algoma will present The Art of Lee Mothes, on exhibit from Aug. 7 through 30.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 pm at Robert Ray Gallery, 520 Parkway St. in Algoma.
Featured artist Lee Mothes grew up close to the ocean in Southern California. He studied art at California State University in Long Beach. He also attended the California College of the Arts in Oakland, California, and received a bachelor’s degree in art at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon. He began painting full time when he opened his Oceans and Dreams studio in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.
Now living in Wisconsin, Mothes returns to the beaches every year to watch the waves and sketch ideas. He finishes these works in his Kaukauna studio. The artist primarily uses graphite, acrylic and watercolor to capture the light, the movement of the waves and the energy of the ocean.
Since 2009, Mothes has enjoyed teaching watercolor painting part-time at the Renaissance School of Art in Appleton. He sells his art through galleries in Wisconsin and Todos Santos, Mexico.
