You know it’s bad when Wayne Carey is reining you in about females and sexual assault.
Which is exactly what happened when Sam Newman claimed the woman raped by sports manager Ralph Carr had “buyer’s remorse” and questioned the evidence around the case.
While we usually refrain from putting anything Newman has to say in writing these days – the relevant deprived are best left ignored – the furore over his latest comments on his You Cannot Be Serious podcast have left many “speechless” and others wanting “to throw up”.
“I’m just wondering what sort of evidence they had about him raping her,” Newman said, filming via Zoom from where he is holidaying in Sicily.
“Other than the fact she might have buyer’s remorse.”
Step in Newman’s co-host Wayne Carey, no stranger to some controversies with women in the past: grabbing a woman’s breast remarking “why don’t you get a bigger set of tits” and a glassing incident immediately comes to mind.
“Sam, Sam given that you’re in Sicily and you are only going off what you are reading, I’d probably suggest (chuckles) you don’t have an opinion about it. Just like, I don’t,” Carey said.
“Did the other party not have to endure the press investigation? It always gets sheeted home to the males,” Newman later added.
“The jury tended to believe the girl rather than the boy.”
Just in case there was any confusion, we thought we would let you in on the facts.
The jury heard all the evidence in the case.
Crucially, they heard the brave and honest words directly from the victim’s mouth.
Her testimony is given in closed court so only the jury are in the best position to evaluate what she said.
She was also grilled by Carr’s experienced barrister, Dermot Dann, KC, while on the stand and did not budge when it came to what happened on the night.
Other key evidence was text messages she sent to her mum in the immediate aftermath.
And body worn camera footage of her initial interactions with police.
As County Court Judge Frank Gucciardo told the jury before they began deliberating: “You are the judges of the facts.
“You must decide this case only on the evidence before the court.”
The jury’s verdict means only one thing: it’s a fact that Ralph Carr is a convicted rapist.
Anti-violence campaigner Sherele Moody called for Newman to be dropped by sporting and media organisations after his comments.
“I hope Newman is cancelled by AFL and by every media outlet that platforms him,” she said.
“How dare he stand up and call a rape victim a liar.”
