Luke Metcalf has sent a statement to coach Andrew Webster in his long-awaited NRL return as he inspired the Warriors to a 28-12 win over the Penrith Panthers on Friday night.

Penrith, meanwhile, suffered a sledgehammer blow in their quest for a fifth premiership in six years after lock Isaah Yeo sustained a potential season-ending pectoral injury.
While the enormity of Yeo’s injury was sinking in for Penrith, the Warriors produced one of the performances of the season on both sides of the ball and now sit just two points adrift of the ladder leading Panthers.
The Warriors dominated for 65 minutes and announced to the rest of the competition’s contenders: we are the real deal in 2026.
“This is a statement night by the Warriors, a massive scalp, a massive win,” Andrew Voss said in commentary on Fox League.
While they scored five tries to two, it was their ferocious defence that set up the Warriors’ win, and they have now conceded just 54 points in their last five games.
Erin Clark crossed in the fifth minute and seven minutes later Luke Metcalf scored their second, leaving the Panthers under the pump.
Penrith went further into the hurt locker when Paul Alamoti was sin binned in the 24th minute for a late lifting tackle on Leka Halasima that appeared to be an unfortunate accident.

“I know it’s extravagant, but I don’t think it’s a sin bin. Alamoti said ‘he jumped’,” Mick Ennis said on Fox League.
Halasima made the Panthers pay while Alamoti was off the field, bumping off Yeo and Nathan Cleary in quick succession in a barnstorming run before putting Chanel Harris-Tavita over.
Things got worse when Yeo left the field and at the break the Wahs were in total control, up 18-0 after the most dominant 40 minute display Penrith have faced all season.
Penrith had not allowed an opposition point in the first 20 minutes of a second half since round 13, but that meant little to the Warriors and when Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad plunged over after just three minutes of the second term and the game was all but gone.
Penrith’s first try came via Cleary on 67 minutes and when the star half sent Jaxen Edgar in three minutes later the raucous home crowd quietened slightly. They were back in full voice when Metcalf sealed the win in the final four minutes.

Leka the wrecker
Warriors second rower-cum-centre Leka Halasima was unstoppable in the first half, running for a bruising 162 metres, punctuated by nine tackle busts.
Starting at left centre for the second week in a row, the 20-year-old was outstanding and will cause nightmares for opposition edge defenders over the course of the next few months.
“What a talent they have unearthed across the Tasman. This young bloke is an absolute freak,” Michael Ennis said in commentary.
“When we think we get a generational player like a Sonny Bill Williams, we get another.”

Metcalf returns
Metcalf, making his first appearance for the Wahs since round five in place of the injured Te Maire Martin, returned to near the form that saw him lead the Dally M ladder midway through 2025 before he succumbed to an ACL injury.
The Dragons-bound half showed just why Warriors coach Andrew Webster refused to release him earlier this year when he first confirmed his move back across the Tasman.
Metcalf controlled the Warriors attack, threatened with his running game and kicked with authority.
“They have found an X-Factor a month out from the finals,” Voss said in commentary.
“The look says it all. What a statement tonight from Luke Metcalf,” added Ennis.

Sutton’s howler
Referee Gerard Sutton and Lindsay Smith both had great games, but the unlikely pair combined for one of the most comical moments of the season early in the second half.
As the Panthers attack spluttered near the Warriors tryline, Smith, who was Penrith’s best in his 100th NRL game, threw an orthodox pass two metres forward to Liam Henry, which Sutton inexplicably said was passed backwards.
The experienced Sutton let the game flow throughout, resisting the urge to blow the whistle in the initial softening up period.

A great defensive effort from the Warriors. The Panthers had 12 attacking sets to the Warriors 8 but were held to nil until the 68th minute.
Four wins from their past five stats for the Warriors, they climb at least temporarily into second position. Their first win against a top five team since defeating the Dolphins in round 8.
Just the Panthers fifth loss of the season, have scored less than 20 points in all five losses. Only the fifth time the Panthers have conceded 20 points or more this season. First time this season the Panthers have trailed by 18 points or more.
Just the Warriors’ second win from their past 12 games against the Panthers – their first win against them in New Zealand since 2018. Only the fifth time they have held the Panthers to 12 or less.
The first time this season Penrith have been held scoreless in the first half. The third time this season the Warriors have conceded zero first half points.
Leka Halasima put in a barnstorming performance, running for 191 metres, easily the best tally of his career.
Fox Lab POTM – A dominant performance from Luke Metcalf in his first game since round five. He scored the fourth double of his career (won all four), set up another try and gave the Warriors great field position with almost 600 kick metres.
