The cast of The Pitt are playing Star Trek together for charity

Fulfilling what we’d estimate to be about 0.01 percent of fanfiction authors’ total hopes and desires for things they’d like to watch the cast of HBO’s The Pitt do with each other, Polygon reports this weekend that Noah Wyle and his various fake TV doctors and nurses will soon be playing the fake doctors and starship captains of TV mainstay Star Trek. Specifically, the show’s cast has signed on to do a live reading of the script for “The Man Trap,” the first broadcast episode of the original Star Trek series from all the way back in 1966, in a benefit show for the Writers Guild Foundation. Although the live event will be held at Los Angeles’ Lodge Room on August 30, livestream tickets are also being sold, so the online hordes can watch Noah Wyle deploy his best William Shatner for the occasion.

Because of course Dr. Robby is the Captain Kirk of this whole operation, as Wyle will lead a cast of Pitt participants that includes Fiona Dourif, Shabana Azeez, and Ayesha Harris, along with Katherine “Nurse Dana” LaNasa, playing Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and Taylor Dearden as the live-read’s version of Spock. (It’s been a minute since we’ve watched the 60-year-old “The Man Trap,” meanwhile, but we remember it goes pretty heavy on the McCoy stuff; we’re excited to hear what LaNasa and Wyle sound like wrestling with a shape-shifting “salt vampire.”) Somewhat amusingly, Isa Briones, the only member of the Pitt cast to have a serious Star Trek background, courtesy of Picard, apparently won’t be appearing in the production.

The Writers Guild Foundation is a non-profit that preserves and promotes the history of screenwriting; the organization was founded in 1966, the same year Star Trek debuted, with series creator Gene Roddenberry as a founding member. Among other things, the group maintains an archive of screenplays, with the script for “The Man Trap”  being pulled out of said library for the event.

The Pitt wrapped up its second season back in April; producers have said they’re aiming to have the show back on the air in January 2027.
