The indefatigable German traveled the world by bicycle for more than half a century continuously, powered by curiousity, creativity, and the kindness of strangers.

Alee Denham has over 170,000 km of bike travel under his belt, spanning six continents. He loves writing, educating, filming, and sharing his knowledge of how to travel by bike through his website, Cycling About. This is his first contribution to Escape Collective.
In 1962, at just 22 years old, Heinz Stücke left his hometown of Hövelhof, Germany, on what he imagined would be a bicycle trip around the world. Instead, it became a 600,000 kilometre (373,000 mile) journey that lasted 51 years. By the time Stücke finally returned to Germany for good, he had visited every country and territory on Earth.
As a fellow bicycle traveller, I always wanted to meet Stücke once he had finally hung up his bicycle. After all, he had shown me that a life on two wheels was not just imaginable – it was possible. I got the chance to visit Stücke in 2023 at his home in Germany. I brought a few of Stücke’s favourite beers, expecting perhaps an afternoon of conversation. Three days later, the stories were still unravelling. They began the second I had walked through the door.
One story flowed effortlessly into the next, each polished by years of telling. One country led naturally to another border crossing, another unlikely encounter, another reminder that Stücke had spent longer on the road than most people spend working at a career.
The remarkable thing was that Stücke didn’t need photographs to remember where he’d been. He carried the entire world in his memory. Dates, city names, people – he seemed to remember the lot. Stücke earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records during the 1990s as the world’s most-travelled person. But the raw statistics of his extraordinary life don’t really explain him.
