Aussie music legend Daniel John has launched a mass sell-off of his sizeable real estate portfolio, leading to speculation as to why and what he has planned next.

The former Silverchair frontman, who has evolved into a highly successful solo artist in his own right, sensibly ploughed the millions he made from selling records into a number of homes up and down Australia’s east coast – worth as much as $20m

It has meant unlike other musos, he hasn’t blown the cash he earned from selling records but instead has set up a comfortable future for himself.

Johns’ most recent property offload was the sale of his Sydney inner city investment pad, for around $1,2m last week.

It was a Darlinghurst home he bought 16 years ago for $670,000.

DREAM HOME SELL OFF

In May, it appeared the Newcastle rocker had given up on a dream abode in his hometown, when he listed the other half of a generous block of land he has owned since 2000 – by which time Johns has established himself as a household name in rock and roll at just 21 – not far from the steel city’s revered Merewether Beach.

Johns recently sold this inner city Sydney home.

Johns has long owned the block just minutes walk from the beach, made famous by former world champion surfer Mark Richards, and knocked down the building there at the start of last year, presumably with the aim of building his dream home.

Depending on its opulence, a home built on the block could have been worth in excess of $10m.

However the 47-year-old split the block mid-last year into two lots and put one of the blocks, a 967.5 sqm offering at 1/8 Charlotte St up for sale.

“For over three years, rock legend Daniel Johns searched across the country-from Tasmania’s wild coastlines to the tranquil towns of southern New South Wales-for somewhere new to call home,” the listing for that sale read.

Johns owned this Merewether block for around 20 years.

It was thought to be where he might build his forver home.

“But despite all that exploration, nothing ever came close to this one. One place kept pulling him back. Charlotte Street, Merewether.

“Eventually, the decision became clear. His iconic Merewether home had spanned two generous blocks-but it was this irreplaceable position that couldn’t be let go.

“So, the house was demolished, and plans for his new dream home in Newcastle were set in motion. Why? Because some lifestyles, some views, and some addresses simply can’t be matched.

Johns explained he demolished the house to “unlock the site’s full potential” and offer one of the two blocks to market.

Johns has now listed this block next door.

It has a price guide of $2.75m to $3m.

But it seems he’s looking for something new.

“This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it’s time for something new that reflects where I’m at now and what’s next,” he said.

That lot was sold on August 6 last year. A sale price was not disclosed. But it is likely worth around $3m.

However, what’s next appears to be Johns saying goodbye to the location all together.

Since being listed in May, the second block at 8a Charlotte St, Merewether is unsold after sittng on the market for almost 100 days.

It sits on 968 sqm and has a guide of $2,750,000 – $3,000,000.

“Tucked away in one of Merewether’s most tightly held cul-de-sacs, this is a rare opening with a story behind it,” the listing for the home reads.

It’s been on the market for almost 100 days.

“The original residence has made way for something new, with the land now split into just two expansive 968 sqm blocks. One is already gone. This is the final chance to claim your place in a street few ever leave.

“Elevated and generous in scale, this is a site that calls for something bold. Sweeping coastal views roll wide across the horizon, paired with a prized northeasterly aspect that pulls in natural light from first light to late afternoon.

“Imagine a vista where the ocean is laid out in full, often dotted with passing whales and dolphins, while by evening the city skyline lights up, adding another layer to the outlook. It’s a front-row position in every sense, one that rewards thoughtful design and makes the most of a view you’ll never tire of.

“Just 1200m from Merewether Ocean Baths and Merewether Beach, you’re close enough to make ocean swims and afternoon surfs part of your daily routine. Follow Bathers Way along the coastline or head into Glenrock State Conservation Area for mountain biking, coastal trails and those quieter, tucked-away beaches.”

In 2024 Johns sold his first investment property, bought when he was just 17 and shortly after Silverchair’s debut album ‘Frogstomp’ had been released and earned platinum certification in the US – selling more than 1 million copies.

Johns bought the four-bedroom home on Ranclaud St, Merewether for $360,000 in May 1996, around the time Silverchair began recording their second album Freakshow.

It was sold for $2.75m in July 2024.

Johns has also lived, owned and sold in Bondi Beach, right on Campbell Parade, opposite the sands of Australia’s most famous beach.

In 2014 Johns, listed his two Bondi Beach apartments, banding together with other owners in the block to sell the entire property for $12m.

The block had uninterrupted views of Bondi Beach and spanned four levels, with six two-bedroom apartments set across three levels and one one-bedroom unit on the ground floor.

Daniel Johns owned two units in this Bondi Beach apartment block.

Johns bought the properties in 2001 and lived in the building for a short time before leasing the properties.

Johns was photographed on the balcony of the Campbell Pde apartment in 2002 after receiving medical treatment in a clinic in Los Angeles for his crippling reactive arthritis

According to property records, Johns still owns a Merewether home a few streets away, right on the beach that he bought for $645,000 in August 1996.
