Former F1 driver David Coulthard has highlighted Kimi Antonelli’s close family ties as a useful tool for the longevity of his career.
The Scotsman likened it to Max Verstappen’s relationship with his father Jos, who is often seen by his side during grand prix weekends.
Antonelli’s own father, Marco, has stayed closely associated with his son during the early stages of his F1 career.
It’s a factor that Coulthard says will serve Antonelli well as he navigates success in F1.
“The kid is super impressive, and I think one thing as well, is the communication of the family, the way they go about racing,” Coulthard told the Up to Speed podcast.
“They’re very grounded, and I think this is something that Max has in his armoury as well, and others of course.
“But this will give him longevity in the career. He’s not sort of a lottery winner, and then everything’s going to go to his head.
“They’re settled. They live in San Marino. They have their comfort, a small principality. I really believe in the longevity.”
Antonelli has enjoyed a highly successful start to the 2026 campaign and holds a 50-point lead in the standings after 11 rounds.
It marks a sharp turnaround from his difficult form last year, leaving Coulthard to praise Mercedes for not pulling the plug on their protege.
“So well done to Kimi Antonelli. Well done to Mercedes for supporting him through and sticking with him in what was an interesting but not an amazing first season of F1.
“But clearly, it was good grounding.”
