NFL preseason live updates: Breece Hall, Brian Robinson Jr. and other trade candidates before Week 1

The NFL regular season is fast approaching. Teams are making their final roster moves ahead of 53-man cutdowns next Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns traded defensive tackle Jowon Briggs to the New York Jets along with a late-round pick swap.

Might Briggs’ new teammate Breece Hall also be traded soon? Well, not if you ask head coach Aaron Glenn.

“We have, like, three good running backs, and I keep saying that, and they all have different skill sets that I’m gonna utilize,” Glenn said Tuesday. “And that does not mean I’m trading Breece, OK? Does not. So I’m gonna say that right now. I just like having three good guys. Hell I wish I had more, but we don’t.”

Glenn was smiling and pretty upbeat when he said it. Still, he brought it up in response to a question about Jets running back Braelon Allen, who is expected to take on a bigger role in the offense this season as the Jets place a bigger emphasis on the ground game. So the notion of trading Hall is out there.

Hall flashed his rookie season in 2022 before tearing his ACL, then returned in 2023 to rush for 994 yards at a 4.5 yard-per-carry clip with five touchdowns, as well as 76 catches for 591 yards and four more scores. His numbers dipped a bit last season, and now as he approaches his second contract he looks set to share backfield touches with not only Allen but also second-year back Isaiah Davis.

That’s made him a natural fit for trade chatter; Yahoo Sports fantasy expert Matt Harmon has pitched the Dallas Cowboys as a good landing spot for Hall. Will a trade come to fruition? It doesn’t seem like the Jets are actively shopping Hall, but if the right offer comes, it might be tough to say no, especially with a quarterback in Justin Fields who’s capable of big contributions running the ball as well. So we’ll say: maybe.

What are the likelihoods for other players whose names have surfaced in the trade market?

Brian Robinson Jr., Washington Commanders — Likely

This one’s a no-brainer. Robinson Jr. sat out both Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals and Wednesday’s practice with permission from head coach Dan Quinn, as the Commanders seek a trade for him. Washington has Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols ready to assume a starter’s share of touches, and the team is high on rookie Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt.

Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders — Unlikely

Reports indicate teams aren’t exactly burning up the phone lines trying to trade for McLaurin and sign him to the big extension he wants. Yahoo Sports Senior NFL Reporter Charles Robinson believes a deal in the $27-$28 million range of average annual value as well as $50-$60 million in guarantees gets it done, and that still feels like the most probable outcome here.

Trey Hendrickson, Cincinnati Bengals — Maybe

Well, the Bengals are at least listening to offers, per reports over the weekend. Given how porous their starting defense has been through two preseason games, it sure seems like they could use the NFL’s reigning sack king, who’s seeking a contract extension and wants a different guarantee structure than the Cincinnati is offering. That said, there is logic to seeing what premium capital the Bengals could recoup in a trade, since the defense is further from competency than just one admittedly great player, and the Bengals’ game scripts seem destined for volatility instead of the consistent fourth-quarter leads to play to Hendrickson’s pass rush strengths. It still feels like a long-term deal gets done, but a trade isn’t out of the question.

Kyle Dugger, New England Patriots — Likely

Dugger is reportedly available for a trade, per the Boston Herald, which makes sense considering it was the previous regime under Jerod Mayo that gave him a four-year, $58 million extension, not the current one under Mike Vrabel. The cap hit, plus questions over scheme fit under new coordinator Terrell Williams, push this into the likely territory.

Kenny Pickett/Shedeur Sanders/Dillon Gabriel — Maybe

Are the Browns really about to carry Kenny Pickett onto the regular season roster despite not taking a preseason snap? It’s a fair question. Sanders and Gabriel, meanwhile, both appear headed for one final audition in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. While the Browns have reiterated they’re OK rostering four quarterbacks during the regular season, it’s been decades since any team did that. Which makes at least one of them a very obvious trade candidate, depending on how the depth chart shakes out and how the Browns want to play it.

Cowboys head coach thinks Micah Parsons will play in season opener: Will Micah Parsons play in Week 1? “I feel good about that, yeah,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said on Wednesday. “I feel good that Micah is going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles.” That’s all fine and good, but the Cowboys and Parsons don’t appear particularly close to the contract extension he’s seeking, and neither side is talking to the other right now, per ESPN.

49ers trade for WR Skyy Moore as Demarcus Robinson is suspended: The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson for the first three games of the season on Wednesday following his DUI arrest last November, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed. Robinson is expected to appeal the suspension. With Robinson out and other big injuries at the position, the 49ers made a move to bolster their WR room and traded for Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore in a deal that also includes a late-round pick swap.

Shedeur Sanders returns to Browns practice: Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders took part in 11-on-11 drills Wednesday for the first time since suffering an oblique injury last week. That injury knocked him out of the team’s second preseason game against the Eagles, though Sanders is on track to play in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Rams, along with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Veteran Kenny Pickett won’t play as he battles a hamstring injury, per head coach Kevin Stefanski. Earlier this week, the Browns named Joe Flacco QB1, and he’ll play some snaps on Saturday too.
