Cricket fans and officials are paying tribute after two players announced their retirements within hours of each other this week. Keith Barker has been forced to call it quits with immediate effect, while Chris Cooke will retire at the end of the current season.
Barker has played 171 first-class matches across a 17-year career with Warwickshire and Hampshire. He also played 73 matches at List A level (domestic 50-over) and 65 T20s.

The 37-year-old all-rounder took 544 wickets and scored 5554 runs with six centuries at first-class level and was part of the Warwickshire team that won the County Championship in 2012. He’s retired with immediate effect due to a knee injury.
“It’s difficult to put into words what Warwickshire means to me,” he said in a statement. “I first came to the club in 2008 and spent 10 years here, before seven brilliant seasons at Hampshire and then getting the opportunity to come back and finish my career where it all started.
“I always knew this day would come, but that doesn’t make it any easier. In my head I still want to compete, still want the ball in my hand and still believe I can make a difference. Unfortunately, after a long career and plenty of injuries, my body is telling me it’s time.”
Chris Cooke set to retire at season’s end
Within hours of Barker’s announcement, Cooke revealed he’ll retire at the end of the County season. The 40-year-old wicket-keeper has scored 8766 runs in 166 first-class games, as well playing 184 T20s and 92 at List A level.
He was captain of Glamorgan between 2019 and 2021, and holds the record for the club’s fastest T20 century off just 38 balls against Middlesex in 2023. “It’s with a mixture of pride and sadness that I announce my retirement,” he said.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have fulfilled a childhood dream of playing professional cricket and to have called Wales my home for the past 17 years. It has been a privilege to represent the ‘Daff’.
“I am excited about the prospect of a last push in Division One. It’s reassuring to leave knowing how strong the club is currently, and how promising the next generation of players are. Diolch am bopeth (Welsh for thanks for everything).”
Chris Cooke and Keith Barker both had long and successful first-class careers.
Glamorgan’s director of cricket Mark Wallace said: “He has represented everything you want to see as a sportsperson and will retire as one of the most respected players in the domestic game. Off the field Chris has been a true role model and professional, with time for everyone.”
