Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend will focus entirely on the German’s breakthrough 1994 Formula 1 season, when he claimed the first of his seven world championships with Benetton.
The release date comes several months after Netflix first announced the project as part of its expanded slate of German-language content for 2026.
Rather than covering Schumacher’s entire career, the film will revisit the dramatic events surrounding the then 25-year-old’s maiden title and his rapid rise to national stardom in Germany.
Schumacher began the season with victory in Brazil and went on to win eight races before securing the championship by a single point over Williams driver Damon Hill.
The title was ultimately decided in controversial circumstances in Adelaide, where Schumacher and Hill collided as the Briton attempted to pass for the championship lead.
The season was also one of the darkest in Formula 1 history following the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and three-time world champion Ayrton Senna during the San Marino Grand Prix weekend at Imola.
Schumacher and Benetton also faced significant scrutiny throughout the campaign amid disputes over regulations and driving standards as the championship fight intensified.
“1994 marks a turning point in Formula 1 history: 25-year-old Michael Schumacher wins the first Grand Prix of the racing season in Brazil, setting the stage for an unprecedented career,” the official Netflix synopsis said when the documentary was announced.
The film will also explore the emergence of ‘Schumi Mania’ in Germany as Schumacher went from one of the sport’s rising talents to its newest world champion.
His wife Corinna Schumacher will feature prominently, recalling the period when the pair were still dating and offering insight into Schumacher away from the circuit.
“Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, and other people close to him reminisce about him at that time,” the synopsis added.
“They remember an uncompromising fighter on the racetrack and a sensitive, empathic man off the course.”
Former Benetton team boss Flavio Briatore will also appear alongside Bernie Ecclestone, David Coulthard, Schumacher’s long-time manager Willi Weber and German broadcasters Kai Ebel and Heiko Wasser.
The documentary is directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries.
It will be Netflix’s second major film centred on Schumacher following the release of Schumacher in 2021, which provided a broader examination of his career and life away from Formula 1.
Schumacher has remained out of the public eye since suffering severe head injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013, with his family continuing to maintain strict privacy around his condition.
