Four people, including two children, have died in a horror crash in Central Queensland on Sunday morning, bringing the statewide toll to 10 deaths since Friday.Â
The crash happened at about 10:50am on the Capricorn Highway, between Blackwater and Comet in the Central Highlands, 230 kilometres west of Rockhampton.
Initial investigations by Queensland Police indicate that a Holden Commodore travelling towards Blackwater with two adults and two children on board struck a Toyota utility, with two people travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the sedan, a 28-year-old man, a six-year-old boy, a seven-year-old girl, and a 32-year-old man all died in the crash.
One 28-year-old man has been taken to Emerald Hospital in a serious but stable condition, and the other ute occupant, a 27-year-old man, has been airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.Â
The Queensland Fire Department said both vehicles were on fire when crews arrived.
Five ambulance crews attended with two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services vehicles.
The RACQ Capricorn Rescue Service helicopter was called but was stood down.Â
The Capricorn Highway between Comet and Blackwater remained closed on Sunday afternoon with a 50-kilometre detour in place through Rileys Crossing Road and Blackwater Cooroorah Road past Bedford Weir.
The detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles.
Police investigations are continuing.Â
Ten people have been killed on Queensland roads since Friday, including three people in a head-on collision in Mackay on Friday night.Â
