Auckland FC are looking to take their first-ever Hahn Australia Cup campaign to the semi-finals when they face Sydney on Saturday evening.

The last meeting between the two sides – in the A-League – ended 2-2 back in April. Another close match is expected on Saturday in the winner-takes-all Cup tie.

Sydney are the first A-League Men’s side that Auckland will play in the Cup. They defeated NPL Queensland outfit Gold Coast Knights and NPL Victoria’s South Melbourne en route to the quarter-finals.

New signing Sam Cosgrove could debut for Auckland in this game. The 28-year-old arrived from English side Barnsley during the week and has been described as a “big, physical” striker who will suit the league by coach Steve Corica.

Sydney faced a tough local derby against Sydney United to reach this stage after defeating fellow A-League Men’s side Western United in the Round of 32.

DR Congo international defender Marcel Tisserand has been added to Sydney FC’s ranks, but won’t quite make it for this weekend’s clash as Ufuk Talay’s men continue to build towards the A-League Men’s season.

Talay, who spoke to the media ahead of Saturday night’s huge quarter-final, is expecting a “big challenge” but is optimistic his side can emerge victorious.

“We’ve been training well, and it’s going to be a massive game against last season’s premiers,” he said.

“Definitely a big challenge.

“They’ve retained most of their squad from last season. We’re still in a phase of bringing players in, but I think we’re in a good place and looking forward to Saturday evening.”

With a potential trophy and place in Asia drawing ever closer, it’s set to be an engaging contest between two strong sides.
