PLYMOUTH overcame the injury absence of No.1 Scott Nicholls to defeat Workington 49-41 at the Coliseum.
The Gladiators operated rider replacement for Nicholls and raced into an early 12-point lead before the Comets cut the gap to four points to set up a tight finish.
Joe Thompson and Danny King combined for a vital 5-1 in Heat 13 which all-but secured the home win, which will leave Workington needing to win their final fixture next weekend to avoid the Cab Direct Championship wooden spoon.
Ben Barker (14+1) and Thompson (13+2) led the way for the Gladiators whilst Troy Batchelor notched 15 for the visitors and Vinnie Foord impressed with 10+2.
