He is rated Australia’s best Indigenous boxing talent since Anthony Mundine.

Now Callum Peters is ready to conquer the world.

The 2024 Paris Olympian will ramp up his bid for a maiden world-title shot when he takes on fellow Aussie Blake Wells for the IBF Pan Pacific middleweight title on the Gold Coast on Wednesday night.

Wells (13-2) is ranked No.15 with the IBF, but the unbeaten Peters (8-0) is rising fast and will move into the world rankings if he beats the ‘Bomber’ in the co-feature to the Nikita Tszyu-Ben Mahoney main event.

It is a measure of Peters’ talent that the 23-year-old, who won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, is ranked second in the world out of more than 3500 amateurs at middleweight.

Since turning pro 18 months ago, the South Australian sensation has knocked out seven of his eight opponents and victory over Wells, 33, will have him poised for bigger fights overseas.

Peters’ promoters, No Limit, regard ‘50 Cal’ as Australia’s finest Indigenous prospect in 20 years and are positioning him to fight for a world title in 2027.

“Callum will be fighting for a world title in the next 12 months, that’s how quickly he has progressed,” No Limit CEO Matt Rose said.

“There is no doubt he is good enough to win a world title.

“In Australia, we haven’t seen a fighter like him in a long time. He is probably our best Indigenous fighter since Anthony Mundine.

“Denzel Bentley is the WBO middleweight world champion and I believe Callum can beat him right now.

“The plan is for Callum to be in a world title fight in the next year.

“Callum is already fighting at a level where he is on a path to global stardom. The Americans are going crazy over him. They are keen to see more of him after what he has done in his last two fights.”

In the past three months, Peters dominated classy American Joeshon James over 10 rounds, before stopping unbeaten Argentinian Ivan Actis (13-0-1) in a seven-round flurry of punches.

Now standing in his path is tough-as-nails Victorian Wells, who hasn’t been stopped in his 15-fight career.

“Callum’s pace and workrate is incredible. He suffocates opponents,” Rose said.

“Wells is a fantastic fight for him. He is strong, awkward, a southpaw and he is No.15 in the world, so this is the perfect fight for Callum to show us if he is ready to fight in America.”
