Pepijn Reinderink went on the offensive on the fifth stage.
Five years ago, Leuven hosted the World Championships where Julian Alaphilippe was crowned winner of the rainbow jersey for the second time in his career. On Sunday, the renowned Belgian city welcomed the peloton for the final stage of the Renewi Tour, one of the season’s World Tour events.
The course wasn’t completely flat, instead consisting of several short hills that took their toll on the bunch, especially on the local laps, where many attacks came. In the general classification, the situation was tight, which meant every second won or lost was precious for the outcome of this 21st edition. In the end, both the stage victory and the overall standings were won by Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), from a reduced field.
Pepijn Reinderink, who attacked in the last four kilometers putting some daylight between him and the chasers before being caught, finished the Renewi Tour as Soudal Quick-Step’s best placed rider on the GC, only one second separating him from the overall top ten.
