Former NRL playmaker Jackson Hastings is set to cop a lengthy suspension after being shown a straight red card for throwing a punch in the Super League.

Hastings, who is now playing for St Helens, was sent from the field in the final stages of the first half after becoming involved in an altercation with Castleford Tigers player Tyler Dupree.

St Helens interim-coach Eamon O’Carroll admitted he had not seen the incident clearly and was forced to rely on the official’s explanation.

“I’ve not seen it and the replays weren’t that great either because it happened in backfield, didn’t it?” O’Carroll said post-match.

“I asked the official as I walked past him and he just said that Jackson had thrown a punch.

However, he conceded that he expects the experienced playmaker to receive at least a one-match suspension as he faces the disciplinary process.

“I would imagine so. The beauty of this year is we’re used to it, aren’t we?” he added.“So we’ll have a look at it, but in the moment then you think about what’s next.”

“So we’ll just crack on.

Castleford Director of Rugby Chris Chester was more blunt when discussing the incident, insisting players know the consequences of throwing punches..

“Scott Murrell just jumped (in the way of Dupree). We all know the rules: you can’t punch people in the face,” Chester said on Sky Sports.

“We’ll let the disciplinary (match review panel) deal with those kinds of things. That’s what they’re there for.”

Now the 28-year-old, who has played 132 NRL games and has made a single appearance for Queensland will join his club teammate Morgan Smithies as key Bears signings.

“He’s got the aggression, the workrate and the Origin pedigree we’ve been targeting, and he slots straight into a pack that’s already taking real shape,” head coach Mal Meninga said in a club statement.
