SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WJAR) — A local college baseball standout made his MLB debut today with the Detroit Tigers, and he had plenty of support back home.
From across the country, those who watched Andrew Sears’ baseball journey from the beginning looked on proudly as West Warwick High School and Rhode Island College’s own Andrew Sears took the mound for the Tigers.
Some of Sears’ former RIC teammates were on hand at Sunday’s watch party at South Kingstown’s Tower Hill Brewery, and three years after he was selected by Detroit in the tenth round of the 2023 MLB draft, it was a thrill to see his hard work pay off.
And while his former coworkers wouldn’t mind if he came back to pick up a few shifts in the off-season at the spot where he once tended bar, they hope this is the start of a long career in the majors.
As Christy Simons, Tower Hill Brewing’s general manager told NBC 10: “I sure hope so because he was wonderful and we all really adore him, so we just wish him the best and we all feel like proud moms around here right now.”
