He missed out on a century for the second time in the match, stumped off Suthar after recklessly stepping down the track.
Mendis, who stroked 55, also failed to carry on throwing his wicket attempting a rash pull shot off Prasidh.
The two batters were instrumental in Sri Lanka’s recovery courtesy of their 115-run partnership for the third wicket.
