The Agence France-Presse (AFP) wires agency has collated a list of the nationalities of those confirmed to be missing after yesterday’s flash floods.
The majority of those unaccounted for are from foreign countries, with the border region between Nepal and Tibet serving as a popular home base for hikers and climbers as they seek to test themselves on some of the world’s tallest peaks, including Mount Everest.
The latest figures from Nepali authorities suggest at least 341 foreigners are among the well over 400 people missing, but keep in mind those numbers are likely to change as more information comes to light.
Here is AFP’s list, updated by me with the most recent information.
India
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, 142 nationals from neighbouring India are missing.
They were in the country with three travel agencies: Samrat Tours & Travels, Leaf Holiday and Himalayan Glacier.
The tourism board earlier said 133 of those Indian nationals were in the country on a pilgrimage to a Hindu sacred site.
Nepal
The Nepali tourism board says a total of 93 Nepalis are currently missing.
Ukraine
Ukraine’s foreign ministry says Nepal’s Tourist Police believe 53 Ukrainian nationals are missing in the floods.
That includes a group of 46 Ukrainian tourists with whom the authorities in Nepal have lost contact.
United States
Forty-seven Americans are missing, according to a tourism board spokesman. Three of those citizens were travelling with Fishtail Tours & Travels, along with the missing Malaysians.
Australia
A list provided by tourism board spokesman Sunil Sharma puts the number of missing Australians at 34.
One of those Australians was travelling with Kathmandu Holiday Tours & Travel, according to the board.
United Kingdom
Thirty-three British citizens are missing, according to the tourism board. That includes 12 UK citizens travelling with the Alpine Eco Trek agency.
Canada
Twenty-four Canadians are missing after the flash floods, Nepal’s tourism board says.
Malaysia
Seventeen Malaysians travelling with Fishtail Tours & Travels are missing in the floods, the tourism board says.
South Korea
South Korean officials confirmed eight hydropower workers were out of contact in the Rasuwa district following the floods.
South Africa
Four South Africans travelling with the same Alpine Eco Trek agency as some of the missing British citizens are missing, according to the tourism board.
Portugal
Portugal’s foreign ministry says two Portuguese people have gone missing, a man and a woman.
“We continue to monitor the situation minute by minute,” a ministry spokesperson told AFP.
Netherlands
A Dutch citizen travelling with Kathmandu Holiday Tours & Travel, the same company as one of the missing Australians, is also unaccounted for, the Nepali tourism board says.
Italy
Italy’s foreign ministry says two of its nationals and their guide are currently stranded upstream from a landslide but were receiving help.
The ministry is aware of 90 Italian citizens currently in Nepal and Tibet, but does not know if any might have been affected.
Unconfirmed
Several international tour groups have also announced they have lost contact with foreigners whose nationalities had not been confirmed.
They include 77 people with Trekkers Society, 26 with Kailash Journey and eight with Richa Tours & Travels.
