Michael Maguire has had enough of being asked if he should be the Broncos coach in 2027 while skipper Pat Carrigan conceded the playing group had let him down during a disastrous title defence.

The defending premiers have won just seven games this year and Thursday night’s 46-20 loss to the Storm was their ninth defeat in a row at home.

Following the loss, Maguire was asked in his press conference if he was the right man to lead the club into the future.
It didn’t take long for him to think of a response and he’s clearly grown sick of the speculation surrounding his future at Red Hill.
“You ask me this every day,” Maguire snapped back.

The Broncos mentor quickly changed the subject to his frustrating footy side, who couldn’t back up a win over Canberra away last week to salute at home in front of departing players including Adam Reynolds.
“I know what this team’s capable of when they stick to it like we did last week. We just shot ourselves in the foot at times throughout that game and put pressure on ourselves. And if you do that at this level, whoever you play, it’s always going to be hard,” Maguire said.
“We need to be smarter and better at times within games. We put ourselves in a position to actually go for it.”

After a tumultuous week where club captain Adam Reynolds retired in controversial circumstances, the Broncos came out against the Storm and looked flat from the opening set.
Maguire was asked if the controversy surrounding Reynolds during the week had anything to do with the loss.
Maguire still maintained it was Reynolds who decided he wasn’t fit to play and ruled himself out of the game rather than himself and the medical team.
“There’s plenty that goes on around every club. There’s plenty that goes on around this club. They rallied around each other. They love their captain and we all wanted him to run out there and have a crack at it, but it just wasn’t to be,” Maguire said.
The Broncos missed 43 tackles and had the Storm not had a player in the bin for 10 minutes, the scoreline could have blown out past 50.

Carrigan said he was very frustrated by the way the Broncos have gone about their title defence.
He looked embarrassed talking about how easy the team has lost their title.
“This club has a high standard and rightly so. It’s been a disappointing year, so we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Carrigan said before being asked if the players had let Maguire down this year.
“Yeah there’s always sentiment of that,” Carrigan said.
“I’ve been here for a while now in the ups and the downs and I’ve always been a big believer that players play the game and we have a responsibility to do that as our job. We’ve missed the mark this year so, yeah, disappointed, frustrated and a lot of hard work has to go into to having a successful season next year.”
