Adam Scott has surged into contention for the $10 million prize at the PGA Tour Championship, while fellow Australian Min Woo Lee remains within striking distance heading into the final round at East Lake.

Scott produced a five-under-par third round to climb into a share of third at 12-under, leaving the Australian veteran just three shots behind leader Viktor Hovland with 18 holes remaining.

And nearly 20 years after winning the Tour Championship, the 46-year-old now has the opportunity to add another remarkable chapter to his career.

Scott, who will be 46 years, one month and 12 days old for the final round, is the oldest player among the leading contenders and will look to become just the fourth player to win the Tour Championship multiple times, joining Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson.

The Australian sits alongside world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg and American Chris Gotterup at 12-under, setting up a stacked chasing pack heading into the final round.

Min Woo Lee also responded strongly after a difficult second round threatened to derail his championship hopes.

The Australian entered Moving Day looking to recover from a three-over-par second round and did exactly that, carding a four-under round to move to nine-under overall and a share of ninth.

Lee will begin the final round six shots behind Hovland, but remains within reach of the leaders with a significant final-round charge required.

While the Australians remain firmly in the mix, Rory McIlroy produced one of the rounds of the day to launch himself back into contention.

The world No.2 fired a seven-under 63, tied for the best round of the day, to surge 16 places up the leaderboard and into a share of seventh at 10-under.

McIlroy’s 63 also tied his career-low round at East Lake Golf Club and leaves the three-time FedExCup champion five shots behind Hovland heading into Sunday.

The Northern Irishman began the third round seven shots behind the leaders, a deficit he has previously overcome on his way to victory.

Three of McIlroy’s 30 PGA Tour titles have come after trailing by seven shots or more through 36 holes, including a nine-shot comeback at the 2010 Truist Championship, another from nine back at the 2021 CJ Cup in South Carolina and a seven-shot turnaround at the 2016 Dell Technologies Championship.

At the top of the leaderboard, Hovland will carry a slender one-shot advantage into the final round as the Norwegian looks to add another FedExCup crown to his 2023 triumph.

Victory would see Hovland become just the fourth multiple winner of the FedExCup, and history suggests he will be difficult to chase down.

Hovland has converted five of his six previous 54-hole leads or co-leads into victories on the PGA Tour and will begin the final round at 15-under, one shot clear of American Ryan Gerard.

“If I can keep hitting fairways and give myself a few more looks, I think I’m pretty deadly with that putter,” Hovland said after his third round.

Behind the leading pair, Scott, Scheffler, Aberg and Gotterup are all lurking three shots off the pace at 12-under, while McIlroy and a host of contenders remain within striking distance.

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre was another major mover on Saturday, matching McIlroy’s seven-under round after struggling to a 76 in the second round.

MacIntyre improved to four-under for the tournament, but remains well back from the leaders heading into the final 18 holes.

Meanwhile, this year’s Open Championship winner Ryan Fox endured a quieter Moving Day, with the New Zealander shooting an even-par third round to fall 10 places into 21st on the leaderboard.

With Hovland defending a one-shot advantage, Scott chasing history and the world’s top two players Scheffler and McIlroy both within five shots of the lead, the Tour Championship is set for a blockbuster final round at East Lake.
