Manchester United youngster James Overy is reportedly set to join Sydney FC in the A-League Men.

According to the Daily Mail’s Nathan Salt, Australian youth international fullback and Perth Glory academy graduate Overy will sign a three-year deal with the Sky Blues.

There is reportedly no fee involved, though there is a buy-back clause, matching rights and a sell-on percentage involved for the Premier League giants.

Earlier this month, Sydney head coach Patrick Kisnorbo was asked about the club’s rumoured interest in the highly-rated 18-year-old.

“It has been mentioned,” Kisnorbo told aleagues.com.au. “I can’t give too much away, but again, there are spots in our team, and it’s only for people that will improve it.”

Overy joined United from Perth Glory in 2024, having caught the eye during a pre-season friendly against West Ham.

Also eligible to represent Scotland having previously played for their Under-19 team, Overy signed his first professional contract with United last year.

Overy helped United reached the FA Youth Cup final last season, having been called up by the Socceroos for the first time ahead of November friendlies against Colombia and Venezuela, though he was an unused substitute.

Since signing for United, Overy has featured for the club’s youth teams, but also spent time training with the first team under both Ruben Amorim and new manager Michael Carrick.

He said the intensity and quality of those sessions is off the charts, telling Football360 in a recent interview: “It’s like you make one mistake and they’re all onto you.

“… I’ve only trained a couple times under (Michael) Carrick just because of being injured. The two times I trained under Carrick have been unreal. But I enjoyed it under Amorim.

“The intensity was really high. Like I just really enjoyed it. Every single day you walk into training, you’re training with Bruno (Fernandes), you’re training with Casemiro, boys like that. The intensity is unbelievable, but the quality is the main difference.”

He added: “You don’t know if you’re going to train (with the) 21s or first team until maybe like 20 minutes before the session, so you’ve always got that buzz around. So obviously you go in, have your (breakfast) and then do your prehab and then you find out.

“If I’m training 21s I don’t mind it but obviously when you get that call up when you’re with the first team you’re like ‘alright let me get up for this session’, you’re excited.”
