South Australian Road Race Championships rocked as police confirm tragic fatality

A serious motorcycle crash has rocked the South Australian Road Race Championships, with police confirming a tragic fatality.

The accident happened just before 11am on Sunday, according to police, at Adelaide’s Motorsport Park at The Bend.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “Just before 11am today (Sunday 30 August), police and emergency services were called to a private racetrack at a motorsport event on Dukes Highway, Elwomple after reports of a crash.

“Sadly, one person has died and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”

It comes just hours after South Australian premier Peter Malinauskas unveiled the official Adelaide circuit set to host the Australian MotoGP Grand Prix from 2027.

Motorsport Australia release a statement later on Sunday.

“Motorcycling South Australia and The Bend confirms that a critical incident occurred during today’s motorcycle racing event, Sunday 30 August 2026,” a statement reads.

“The rider was treated by paramedics and died at the scene.

“Motorcycling Australia’s critical incident plan is in action and staff are working with the relevant authorities following the incident.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the rider’s family, friends and the wider motorsport community. We also acknowledge and thank the officials, paramedics and first responders for their efforts at the scene.

“We ask that the privacy of the rider’s family, friends and all those affected be respected at this difficult time.

“No further information is available at this stage.”
