WHY TASSIE COULD MAKE HUGE PREMIERSHIP PIE PLAY

Tasmania has been tipped to “throw the kitchen sink” at Jordan De Goey when the premiership Magpie’s contract expires at the end of next season, according to The Age’s Sam McClure.

De Goey in 2022 turned his back on free agency – and a lucrative offer from St Kilda – to sign a five-year contract extension to remain with the Magpies.

But that deal runs out at the end of the 2027 season – just months before the Devils will enter the AFL competition.

Speaking on Channel 9 on Monday night, McClure says he’d be surprised if Tassie didn’t target the premiership Magpie.

“He’s out of contract at the end of next year. It’s not the first time that he would have looked elsewhere. I know he came reasonably close talking to St Kilda,” McClure told Footy Classified.

“Tasmania coming in at the start of the next year. Derek Hine was the guy that drafted him 12 years ago – he’s now the national recruiter at the Devils.

“I’d be absolutely shocked if they didn’t throw the kitchen sink at him, given that Tasmania are going to have some pretty good picks. Let’s see what happens in that space.

“But with all these people coming in (to Collingwood) potentially … there’ll have to be people going out.”

Geelong midfielder Tom Atkins’ sharp focus remains winning this year’s flag, but says he’s hopeful his club can lure superstar free agent Zak Butters to the Cattery.

Butters last week officially informed Port Adelaide of his desire to exercise his free agency rights, but didn’t nominate which club he’d like to join.

The Cats and Western Bulldogs are widely considered the clubs best placed to land Butters, although cashed-up Richmond reportedly has the biggest contract offer on the table. The Tigers, too, have the trade capital to satisfy the Power, who are being tipped to match the rival-club offer Butters ultimately chooses, which would force the two clubs into a trade.

Speaking to reporters, Atkins reiterated his desire for Geelong to win the 2026 premiership, but said he had high admiration for Butters.

“I haven’t given it too much thought to be honest, been pretty focused on just giving it a good run this year, but I’ve loved coming up against Zak every time we’ve played them,” Atkins said.

“He’s a great competitor, and we will take any good player, really, let alone one of the best in the comp. Hopefully we get that done, but I just want to win a flag this year, that’s all I really care about.

“Maybe there are guys that are thinking, ‘Oh yeah, this would be awesome having him’. But that’s not for me, I want to win this weekend.”

Butters, a triple All-Australian and triple best and fairest winner, has played 156 AFL games since being selected with Pick 12 in the 2018 draft.
