The documentary “Στην Άλλη Άκρη του Κόσμου” (On the Other Side of the World) has begun airing on COSMOTE TV, showcasing the stories of Australia’s Greek communities to viewers from the homeland.

The film, directed by Nikos Panderarakis and researched and edited by Andriani Angelidaki, premiered on COSMOTE TV on 14 August and is scheduled to air once a month on COSMOTE HISTORY while also being available on demand.

The film delves into many questions surrounding the diaspora in Australia, such as: When did the first Greeks arrive in distant Australia? Who were the people who dared to leave their homeland and embark on a journey into the unknown – without provisions but armed with determination, hope, and dreams of a better life?

The documentary, produced with the support of the Region of Crete, explores the history of Greeks in Australia, going as far back as to the arrival of the first Hellenes in 1829.

Filming for the documentary began in May 2023 when Andriani Angelidaki travelled to Melbourne to attend the commemorative events for the Battle of Crete and the Greek community parade.

It was there inspiration sparked to explore the subject of the Greek diaspora in Australia deeper, particularly in relation to how it has maintained its connection to its Hellenic identity.

The film features interviews with academics, historians, researchers, representatives of the Greek diaspora, and first, second, and third-generation Greeks, and seeks answers to key questions:

What factors led thousands of Greeks to immigrate to Australia?
What have the relations between Greece and Australia been like over time?
How did the Greeks manage to integrate and thrive in Australian society?
How did they keep alive elements of their Greek identity, language, traditions, and cultural heritage?
How did Australia welcome and integrate hundreds of different ethnic groups that today make up its multicultural character?

Through personal testimonies, family stories, and historical evidence, the film highlights the power of memory, the need for survival, the search for opportunities, and humanity’s relentless effort to build a better life.

The documentary’s journey continues on the project’s official website, which features additional historical material, information about the production, and details on the Greek presence in Australia.
