The Panthers waived their former fourth-round pick, Zavala, after he started 14 of 34 game appearances for the team in his first three seasons of NFL play. After clearing waivers, he returns to their practice squad, continuing as a depth option for Carolina.
The Texans are taking a flyer on the former Alabama second-round pick, Braswell. He wasn’t able to break into the starting lineup over two seasons in Tampa Bay, accumulating just 2.5 sacks but getting 12 quarterbacks hits. Houston’s got a deep stable of ends led by Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and Jadeveon Clowney, so Braswell will join a low-pressure situation in which he can try to develop.
After failing to help spark the offense in Cleveland over the past three seasons, former Tennessee third-rounder Tillman is headed to the Big Easy. Injuries have the Saints quite thin at the position at the moment, so there’s a chance Tillman could make an early impact if he can pick up the offense quickly.
Although Cade Klubnik won the Jets’ backup job, Aaron Glenn is keeping a modicum of security around in Zappe. The Jets waived Brady Cook but will hang onto Zappe, who is entering his fifth NFL season. The young journeyman has made nine career starts.
