RC Vannes returns to the Top 14 with considerably more than another promotion to celebrate. One season after finishing 14th in its first campaign at France’s highest level, Vannes responded by overwhelming Pro D2, going 24-1-5 with 116 points while scoring 1,092 and conceding 543.

The postseason reinforced that dominance. Vannes crushed Oyonnax 48-7 in the semifinal before beating Provence Rugby 18-14 in the final to become Pro D2 champion and secure immediate promotion.

That makes Vannes 2026-27 a different proposition from the club’s first Top 14 adventure. Most of the championship-winning team remains, substantial reinforcements have arrived and Jean-Noël Spitzer continues to lead the project. Now comes the real test: Can Vannes turn its rapid rise into a permanent place among France’s elite?

Can RC Vannes Stay In The Top 14 This Time?

Vannes already knows what failure at this level looks like. Its 2024-25 team finished last with 36 points and a minus-230 scoring differential.

Avoiding another immediate relegation is therefore the defining challenge. Finishing 12th guarantees safety; 13th means traveling to face the Pro D2 finalist in the Access Match.

Vannes Kept Its Promotion Core Together

Few promoted teams could ask for greater continuity.

Twenty-one of the 23 Vannes players used in the promotion final remain, including 14 of 15 starters. Mako Vunipola is the only starter from that XV to leave.

Instead of replacing the team that dominated Pro D2, Vannes has built around it.

Vannes Transfers Added Experience Where It Matters

The recruitment strategy was extensive.

Matías Alemanno arrived with 99 Argentina caps, while Ugo Boniface, Giorgi Beria and Sione Mafileo strengthen the prop group. Mills Sanerivi, Ioane Iashagashvili and Simione Kuruvoli bring additional international experience.

Pierre Popelin, Raymond Nu’u, Inia Tabuavou, Nathanaël Hulleu and Joe Jonas add competition among the backs.

The result is a deeper roster rather than one constructed around a single marquee arrival.

Can Vannes’ Defense Survive The Step Up?

This is the most important rugby question.

Vannes conceded 543 points across 30 Pro D2 matches last season. During its 2024-25 Top 14 campaign, that figure was approximately 891 — about 34 per match.

The new forwards should increase competition and physicality, but Vannes must demonstrate that its scrum, collisions and defense can translate against Top 14 opposition.

Stade de la Rabine Could Decide Vannes’ Fate

Vannes went 15-0 in home-designated regular-season matches in 2025-26, including 14 wins at Stade de la Rabine.

Maintaining a significant home advantage is critical. The club’s reach also continues spreading across Brittany: its September home game against Toulouse will be played at Roazhon Park in Rennes.

RC Vannes has now earned Top 14 promotion twice in three seasons. The next stage of the Vannes rugby story is no longer about reaching the elite. It is about staying there.
