CAM Waters confesses he has mixed feelings about the Adelaide Street Circuit switch that will take effect next year.

Waters is one of Supercars’ premier drivers. He has 20 championship races under his belt on the current 3.22km track in the heart of the South Australian capital, three of which he’s either started or finished first.

The beloved layout is set to be ditched after this November’s bp Adelaide Grand Final in favour of a longer alternative as MotoGP comes to town in 2027, with only minor modifications to be applied before Supercars then utilises the new 4.13km configuration.

“Tearing up one of my favourite racetracks, I absolutely love driving around there, it’s one of the best of the year, so obviously disappointed in that aspect but I can kind of see the other side of it,” Waters told V8 Sleuth.

“What they’re trying to do with MotoGP is going to be amazing for Adelaide and South Australia.

“The new track has massive shoes to fill for Supercar racing.

“I guess I’ll just reserve judgement until I’m driving around it. Hopefully it’s as good, if not better, than what we have got now.”

Waters said he was “pretty disappointed” with the first draft of the new layout, but noted subsequent versions have brought considerable improvement.

“I wouldn’t really call it much of a street track; it’s just going to be different,” he noted.

“I don’t think you can really compare it to what we have got now, which is such a cool bullring track for Supercar racing.”

Waters is in the unique position of having a particular appreciation for racing on two wheels, given his cousin Josh is a regular in the Australian Superbike Championship.

Anyhow, he’ll look to savour one last hurrah on the current Supercars circuit and then hope the iconic event’s new era lives up to the hype.

“You kind of have to look forwards sometimes, not backwards,” said Waters.

“Hopefully it’s a good thing as a whole and hopefully we can come up with a good compromise for a good Supercar track.”
