The Toronto Blue Jays (69-71) won for the fourth time in five games on Wednesday night, moving to within a game-and-a-half of the Cleveland Guardians (70-68) in the race for the American League’s last wild-card spot. The teams decide a three-game series on Thursday at Progressive Field in Cleveland, with the Guardians dropping three of their last five. The Guardians lead Toronto, the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles in the wild-card hunt and trail the Chicago White Sox by three games in the AL Central as they continue a 10-game homestand while Toronto stands 4-1 on its current nine-game road trip.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered and drove in five runs as the Blue Jays rolled to an 11-0 rout on Tuesday night. Dylan Cease continued his dominant pitching, allowing four hits over six shutout innings. Guerrero’s three-run shot capped a five-run second inning and Josh Smith belted a solo shot in the eighth for Toronto. Myles Straw and George Springer smacked RBI doubles as well.

Joey Cantillo surrendered nine runs, four earned, in 5.1 innings for Cleveland, striking out six as Toronto banged out 15 hits against three Cleveland pitchers, with backup catcher Austin Hedges working the final 1.2 frames. Chase DeLauter finished with three of the Guardians’ six hits while Patrick Bailey finished the night 2-for-3.

Right-hander Tanner Bibee (5-14) closes the series for the Guardians, entering with a 3.88 ERA and 1.158 WHIP in 28 starts and 162.1 innings. Toronto gives the ball to right-hander José Soriano (11-7), who comes in with a 3.45 ERA and 1.275 WHIP in 151.1 innings covering 27 starts. Soriano owns a 4.13 ERA and 1.376 WHIP in five starts with the Blue Jays since coming over from the Los Angeles Angels as last month’s trade deadline.
