E-bikes still make up a small portion of the overall U.S. cycling market. In 2024, e-bikes accounted for about 7% of U.S. bicycle sales, according to PeopleForBikes. What’s more, sales have trended toward commuter bikes that have a throttle, meaning the rider doesn’t have to pedal to power the bike.

The same group estimated more than 112 million Americans rode a bike at least once in 2024 — nearly one-third of the U.S. population and the highest participation since the survey began in 2014.

The climb in e-bike use may, in part, be attributed to the growing number of people over the age of 65. In 2025 that group’s size climbed to 61.2 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, or about 17% of the total population.

In 2024, Montana joined 10 other states where older adults outnumbered children, yet the West as a whole had one of the lowest median ages — 38.4.
