A blockbuster Cameron Munster move to the Brisbane Broncos is one step closer, after the Melbourne star reportedly rejected a Storm contract offer.

Munster’s future has been up in the air for months, with the veteran five-eighth not committing to the Storm any further than the end of his current deal, which expires in 12 months’ time.

The Daily Telegraph’sPeter Badel reports that the 31-year old didn’t consider the Storm’s two-year, $1.5 million offer to be enough to convince him to stay, with the club informed that he will be testing the market.

His current deal is for a reported $1.1 million per season.

The club had previously given Munster the all-clear to negotiate only with the Papua New Guinea Chiefs, who have already secured a swath of star signatures including Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Alex Johnston and Joey Manu ahead of their inaugural NRL season in 2028.

Munster’s player agent Justin Caines told the Telegraph that “healthy discussions” with the Storm remain ongoing, but that the Queensland great needs to consider his future.

“I have informed Melbourne of Cameron’s desire to test the open market in November,” Caines said.

“In years gone by, Cameron has remained loyal and taken less to remain at Melbourne. But with the trajectory of the salary cap, it would be remiss of us to not see what is out there for Cameron.

“This free agency is a different scenario for Cameron. He now has a wife and three lovely children whose futures he needs to secure, so he has a lot to consider.”

Caines took over as Munster’s agent after Anasta stepped down from his role to continue as the face of Fox League, with the Storm five-eighth taking a cheeky jab at his now former agent and Cooper Cronk in a hilarious interview after Melbourne’s win over Cronulla.

Munster’s future was a topic of conversation, with Cronk asking the Melbourne superstar why he was reading headlines in the paper about the 31-year-old’s future at the club being in doubt.

“Don’t be throwing stones in glass houses Coops,” Munster laughed, calling it a “media beat-up”.

“I think with my new manager Justin, I got rid of Braith so he’s been doing some good stuff for me at the moment, Justin. So see ya Braith and all the best with Justin, we’re going to the world.”

“We’re going overseas to St Helens,” Munster then cheekily added when new Saints coach Kevin Walters asked a question.

Munster was a prime target for the Dolphins ahead of the club’s entrance into the NRL in 2023, but ultimately chose to knock back a reported $6 million offer to remain loyal to the Storm and coach Craig Bellamy.

Under NRL rules, Caines and Munster cannot approach rival clubs until November 1, but the demand for his services is expected to be fierce.

He has already been strongly linked to the Broncos, who are in dire need of halves with Adam Reynolds having retired and Ben Hunt also expected to call it quits at the end of next season.

Munster would be a significant coup for the 2025 premiers, whose disastrous title defence came to an end on Thursday night with a 34-20 win over the Bulldogs to leave them 14th on the ladder.

The three-time Dally M five-eighth of the year has publicly hinted at a return to his home state, where his status as a Maroons legend would only be enhanced by finishing his career as a Bronco.

He cited AFL games record holder Scott Pendlebury’s decision to leave Collingwood for the Gold Coast Suns, where he is set to wind up as a player before transitioning into coaching, as an example to potentially follow.

“Who knows, I could do a Scott Pendlebury,” Munster told CODE Sports.

“I don’t know if I’ll be playing the high quality footy that he’s playing, but I could definitely squeeze the lemon if I have to.”
