Health authorities have issued an urgent recall notice for a popular cream used to provide pain relief for sore muscles and joints.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration issued the notice on Monday, warning that anyone who had purchased Deep Heat Extra Strength 100g cream should not use the product.
“Mentholatum Australasia Pty Ltd is conducting an urgent recall of two batches of Deep Heat Extra Strength 100g cream due to contamination,” the TGA said.
“If you have purchased any affected batches of the product, do not use it.”
The recall was issued after testing detected “higher than acceptable levels” of a bacterium known as Pluralibacter gergoviae.
“Contaminated products with Pluralibacter gergoviae can potentially result in serious infections, particularly for patients with broken skin or weakened immune systems,” the TGA said.
Contaminated products have the batch numbers V772 and V773, with the expiry date listed as June 2029.
Consumers who have purchased the contaminated product are being urged to return it to the place of purchase or contact Mentholatum Australasia for further advice.
