Hollyoaks is set to escalate a dark storyline between Caleb and Jonah Keane as new lockdown scenes air.

As part of an ongoing storyline that began last month, the soap has been exploring Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA).

After Caleb told his dad that he wanted to travel the world with his girlfriend Frankie Osborne, Jonah told him a big secret about his late mother, saying she was having an affair before she got ill and was planning to leave them.

Later, Jonah held a barbecue and was disappointed by his guests’ low energy, so he secretly added Beth’s anxiety medication to the tiramisu.

Since then, Jonah has been drugging his son with the same medication to prevent him from travelling, with the soap highlighting the impact of FDIA, historically known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

In this week’s scenes, Jonah is uneasy when he realises his son Caleb is making progress in regaining his mobility and learning to walk again, a development set to propel the storyline into darker territory.

In scenes set to air next week, Misbah tells Caleb that his test results suggest he’s perfectly well and Jonah feigns concern.

Sebastian is released from the hospital, and Warren tells Jonah that he must be extra cautious given his weak immune system.

This gives Jonah an idea as he enforces a lockdown at the Keane house to protect Caleb from infection, but Maddox thinks Jonah is overprotective, so he sneaks Caleb out of the house.

Jonah is taking precautions, spraying disinfectant around the house as he tells Beth that Caleb is having night terrors. Beth comforts Jonah, and Jonah continues to lead Caleb to believe he’s unwell.

During a scuffle, the pills Jonah had been hiding are now in plain sight. Will anyone spot them?

Speaking about the storyline, Matthew Wolfenden, who plays Jonah, opened up about FDIA, saying: “What I know about this condition is that, the kind of perpetrator will push it and push it and push it until really bad things happen.

“They end up killing people in the end. The condition suggests that you love that person so much that you want to keep looking after them, you want to be the carer, you want them to be ill so you can keep them there under your roof and in your eye line.

“You never want to let them go, you love them so much. And the knock-on effect of what you’re doing to them is actually killing them.”

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
