Unfair dismissal claims involving gig economy workers have jumped from virtually none to 500 in the first year of Labor’s reforms in the sector, adding to a wave of cases often fuelled by artificial intelligence that are threatening to overwhelm the workplace umpire.
Fair Work Commission president Justice Adam Hatcher revealed in a speech to an Australian Industry Group summit on Tuesday that unfair deactivation laws for the gig economy, which Labor introduced in August 2024, had triggered a surge that was fuelling a backlog of unresolved claims.
