BERLIN – Japan fell short of the Women’s Basketball World Cup quarterfinals with an 84-63 playoff loss to Hungary on Tuesday.
The quarterfinal playoff in Berlin pitted world No. 10 Japan, the third-placed team in Group A, against world No. 19 and Group B runner-up Hungary.
Japan trailed early before rallying in the second quarter. But with shooting guard Saki Hayashi limited by a right arm injury, Japan posed less threat from three-point range.
Hungary pulled away after halftime to advance to a quarterfinal meeting with four-time defending champion the United States.
Point guard Kokoro Tanaka led Akatsuki Japan with 11 points, while Norika Konno and Mai Yamamoto each added 9.
