Anthony Albanese has now twice been asked why a Daily Telegraph report in 2019 mentioned his honorary membership of the Marrickville Golf Club, despite the prime minister claiming he did not know about his membership until recently.
The matter has become one of public interest after revelations Labor gave the club a $6 million grant as an election promise.
Albanese twice failed to respond directly to the question, instead speaking about the reason the club was in the news in 2019.
“This is an absolutely vital and precious piece of the inner west of Sydney. Just like we have had projects, including the Cooks River bike path, just like there’s a water park down there at Steel Park, and a range of projects that have improved the amenity,” he said.
“What we did was go to an election campaign and make commitments for round about 500 projects. What [the opposition] did, what you did, was you went to an election campaign with more than triple, more than triple, $1.6 billion of projects for more than … 1000 [grants], but you couldn’t find one of the 1000 in the inner west of Sydney.”
