The Sandown Summer Enduro – previously known as the AASA 6 Hours of Sandown – will remain on the initial date of December 4-6, which had previously been slated for the now-defunct AASA Race Series.
August’s Fight in the Night at Queensland Raceway saw the biggest field to date for the revamped AEC, a trend that the category expects to continue for the Sandown event.
“The Sandown Summer Enduro is being put together and promoted by AEC, and it’s the right way to finish the season,” said category owner Karl Begg.
“The new era of AEC is going well and continuing to build. The classing model and flexible regulations have created affordable, enjoyable and clean endurance racing, and we’re picking up new competitors every round.
“We have several support categories committed for this event, with announcements coming in the weeks ahead.”
Licensing and permits will be provided by AASA, with AEC to headline the event, and seven support categories to be announced.
Victorian-based competitors are encouraged to enter the event, which will provide a unique experience for state competitors to race in a national category.
With the limited days available for national-level competition at the suburban circuit, the event gives AEC the opportunity to etch its name in Sandown’s unique endurance racing history.
The opening three rounds have seen a wide variety of cars entered, from production cars and GT-style machinery to a type-996 Porsche Carrera Cup car.
Tony Quinn/Matt McCutcheon have come away with two outright victories, both coming at Queensland Raceway, while Jake Camilleri/Glenn Walker took the honours at Sydney Motorsport Park.
On each occasion, a production-spec BMW crossed the line in second position, well in contention for the win.
The Sandown Summer Enduro will be held on December 4-6. Livestream details for Sandown will be announced in due course.
