The Cooper Murray/Lochie Dalton Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro on track during practice at The Bend.
Renowned for its speed during the Ryco Enduro Cup, Erebus Motorsport showed supreme speed in Practice 4.
Dalton logged a 1:17.4144s in the #99 to head Hughes by 0.1005s in the #9 car.
Dalton, who moved from Tickford to Erebus between seasons, had one moment during the session when he ran wide at Turn 5 and into the grass.
“It’s quite difficult to drive at the moment,” said Dalton, noting the car’s knife-edge behaviour.
“I think we can make it a lot better and there is obviously a lot more in us drivers.
“If we can tune up a few things, I think we’ll be happy.
“I need this for quali and a race not practice, but it’s good – we’re on the right path, I think.
“Just needed everything to settle down a little bit. Sometimes you get an easy car to drive and you’re slow, so I’m not complaining.
“It just needs to calm down, be a little bit nicer, and know what to expect a little bit.
“I would rather have this than a slow car, for sure. The team has done a great job, just need to fine-tune and get it in the perfect window.”
Mark Winterbottom led Ford’s efforts in third for Tickford Racing, 0.1469s off the pace. He led Will Davison (with Matt Payne) and Reuben Goodall (with Thomas Randle).
Ryan Wood’s co-driver Jaxon Evans was the best of the Toyota contingent in 11th and 0.4878s in arrears of Dalton.
Harri Jones completed the most laps of any driver with 28 logged against his name in the Matt Stone Racing Camaro he shares with Jack Le Brocq.
Practice 5 at The Bend Motorsport Park gets underway at 12:00pm ACST.
