Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes has revealed how many seasons of the drama are on the way.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Rhimes confirmed that the hit Netflix drama, which has aired three seasons so far, has five more seasons to go.

Asked how many seasons the show will run for, Rhimes said she plans to make “exactly eight” in total (via The Independent).

“The Bridgerton series is eight children. Violet Bridgerton and all eight of her children married. So every season is a child,” Rhimes said, before explaining that there is “a possibility for spin-offs”.

Based on Julia Quinn’s Regency romance novel series, the costume drama follows eight siblings in the Bridgerton family as they navigate London’s high society in search of love.

With each book in Julia Quinn’s original Bridgerton series focusing on one of the eight Bridgerton siblings, it makes sense that the show would run for eight seasons.

Elsewhere in the interview, Rhimes opened up about how she first discovered Quinn’s novels, saying she read the first book after finding it in a hotel room and quickly went out to buy the rest.

“I had a lot of disdain for romance novels,” she said. “But I read this book, and it was so good that I got out of bed sick, went to the bookstore, bought the rest of the books and came back and read them.”

“But I didn’t see it as a romance novel. To me, Bridgerton is a workplace drama. The women have no power in any other areas of their lives.

“The only place they have power is in who they marry and how they marry, and that marriage is a workplace, and those are colleagues coming together to make sure that their faiths and futures are sealed in a way that is positive for them. Now I know that’s not how you think of it, but that’s how I thought of it.”

Bridgerton seasons 1-3 are streaming on Netflix, along with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
