Bermudian artist Soleé Darrell is set to be featured in Live the moment light, a group exhibition opening at the Palo Alto Art Center in California on September 19.
The exhibition, which will run through December 13, 2026, brings together work by Darrell, Terri Friedman, Corita Kent and Angelica Trimble-Yanu, exploring connections between the artists through colour, material, experimentation and process. The exhibition is guest curated by Christine Koppes.
Organisers said the exhibition explores the continuing influence of Corita Kent across generations of contemporary artists, with the four artists using distinct visual languages while examining how lived experiences can be transformed through art. The exhibition takes its title from Kent’s 1977 serigraph live the moment light.
Darrell, a California-based Bermudian artist, works with stretched silk velvet rather than traditional canvas, applying powdered pigment dye directly to the material.
The Bermuda National Gallery previously noted, “Whilst Darrell’s large-scale abstract works appear at first glance to be on canvas, they are in fact stretched silk velvet. Rather than paint she uses powdered pigment dye, which she will sprinkle, or sometimes mix with water and pour directly onto the surface in much the same way that abstract expressionist Helen Frankenthaler poured paint thinned with turpentine onto a raw canvas. She uses both brushes and her hands; it is an organic and highly tactile process.”
