This past weekend, the Texas women’s basketball team wrapped up its appearance at the 2025 Globl Jam tournament with a silver showing against the host nation.
Behind 24 points from Washington guard Avery Howell, Canada posted a 72-65 win over Texas in the Globl Jam’s championship game at the Mattamy Athletic Center in Toronto. Like VCU did in 2022 and Louisville in 2023, Texas was representing USA at the event.

Texas had recorded a 70-61Â win over Canada earlier in the Globl Jam event. The Longhorns also recorded 85-45 and 90-54 beatings of all-star teams from Puerto Rico and Brazil while they were in Toronto.
“We’ll grow and learn from it,” Texas coach Vic Schaefer said afterward. “You have to give Canada credit. I thought they played really well.”

Texas uses four starting lineups throughout Globl Jam event
Texas didn’t often use the element of surprise during the introduction of its starting lineup last season; only six players started in more than five games for a Final Four qualifier that went 35-4. But Shay Holle (39 starts) and Taylor Jones (37 starts) exhausted their college eligibility, Aaliyah Moore (19 starts) will be unavailable this season as she recovers from lingering knee problems and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda (15 starts) transferred to Vanderbilt a few months ago.
So Texas will need a few new starters. And Schaefer was given the chance to experiment with his lineup in Toronto.

To nobody’s surprise, Harmon and Madison Booker started each of UT’s four games. Harmon will enter her fifth season of college basketball needing just 46 assists to break Kamie Ethridge’s longstanding career record at Texas. A junior, Booker is already a two-time All-American.

In an event-opening rout of Puerto Rico, Texas also started Jordan Lee and Justice Carlton alongside center Kyla Oldacre (Oldacre suffered a lower body injury while scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in nine minutes on the court and did not play for the rest of the Globl Jam tournament). In UT’s first meeting with Canada, Lee started again but was joined this time by Cunningham and fellow newcomer Teya Sidberry. Against Brazil, Texas lined up Bryanna Preston, Missouri transfer Ashton Judd and Cunningham with Harmon and Booker.

Texas went with a starting lineup of Harmon, Booker, Preston, Cunningham and Sidberry in the gold-medal game.
“I didn’t really want to experiment with that many rotations, but I had to,” Schaefer said. “We’ve got a lot of growing, a lot of (maturing) that we’ve got to do to get better. (This trip) exposes you a little bit at times. It’s so much better than going on a foreign tour when you win by 60 every night and everybody thinks you’re playing great and you’re really not doing anything at all.”
One player who did not start for Texas in Toronto? Five-star freshman Aaliyah Crump, who did play over 20 minutes in two of UT’s games. Since they had been playing with their national teams in August, freshman Grace Prenter (Ireland) and Florida Atlantic transfer Lovisa Asbrink Hose (Sweden) did not make the trip with Texas to Canada.
