On Sept. 11 and 12, the women’s tennis team participated in a tournament against Vassar College after coming off a strong Union Tournament performance.
On Sept. 5 and 6, the Hawks competed in Schenectady against four teams from the Liberty League, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Saint Lawrence University, Union College and Ithaca College. The tournament was very successful with only two matches lost. The singles competition began with an unfortunate loss for the Hawks, but they wasted no time in catching up.
First-year Delphine Larosiliere was able to clutch an 8-2 victory against Union College. Second-year Alex Krol followed with an 8-6 win against Union College. Second-year Lula Brown-Vann took two wins in a row, winning her first match with a score of 8-2, and her second resulting in 8-4. Brown-Vann brought in the energy for the Hawks, which was eventually followed by another win from first-year Eva DeJesus, with a score of 8-5. The singles round closed out with five wins for the Hawks and one loss.
The doubles match followed a similar pattern. It began with a loss for the Hawks, but they didn’t let that stop them from playing hard. DeJesus and Larosiliere were able to defeat Union College 8-1 in their match. Fourth-year Olivia Kunz and third-year Angelica Gabriel worked together to pull through another win with a score of 8-6. Fourth-year Alyssa Trokie and first-year Elloise Larosiliere earned two wins in a row for the Hawks, with both scores being 8-4.
After coming off of their strong performance, the Hawks entered into another tournament on Sept. 11 and 12. Unfortunately, another game was planned for Sept. 13, but it was canceled due to inclement weather, ending the tournament earlier than expected.
Round one of the tournament was New Paltz against Vassar College. Vassar College and SUNY New Paltz have a long history, with their first game dating back to 2002. Vassar College has proven itself to be quite the matchup for SUNY New Paltz, and this week’s games were no exception.
This round included a series of singles and doubles. The games on Sept. 11 weren’t the strongest for the Hawks, with all 12 of them ending in losses.
The tides turned for the better on Sept. 12 as the Hawks regained their momentum. The Hawks competed against both Connecticut College Hamilton and NYU. Third-year Angelica Gabriel and fourth-year Olivia Kunz won doubles against Connecticut 6-3. Not only did they win doubles together, but Kunz and Gabriel each won their singles match as well, with Gabriel winning a 7-6 tiebreaker and Kunz winning 6-4. These wins were followed by a doubles win from Kunz and second-year Patrycja Filonik, with a score of 7-5. The women’s tennis team will compete again on Sept. 23 against the Manhattanville University Valiants.
