For Jenna Van Der Velden riding a bike is a way to get around.

“Cycling is my main mode of transport for getting to and from work, and I also choose to ride for many of my other day-to-day trips,” she said.

“For me, it’s often quicker than public transport, and it has helped me discover parts of the city that I may never have explored otherwise.”

But as Head of Prevention at Diabetes Victoria, Van Der Velden also knows that physical activity is one of the most important ways people can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Regular movement helps the body use insulin more effectively, supports overall metabolic health and improves overall wellbeing.

And every little bit helps.

“The good news is that you do not need to become an athlete to experience benefits,” explained Van Der Velden.

“Activities like walking, cycling, gardening or being active with family and friends can all make a difference.”

Diabetes Victoria is the state’s leading peak body dedicated to reducing the impact of all types of diabetes on people, communities and health systems.

The organisation’s Life! program, delivered by qualified health professionals, helps those at risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke to make sustainable, positive lifestyle changes — including by boosting physical activity levels through habits like riding a bike.

Over 400,000 Victorians live with diabetes, and the condition’s impact ripples far wider when you consider the families and supporters involved.

This year, Diabetes Victoria is a partner charity of United Energy Around the Bay.

“Around the Bay aligns strongly with Diabetes Victoria’s focus on prevention and healthy living,” said Van Der -Velden.

“The event encourages people of all ages and abilities to get active, set personal goals and experience the physical and mental health benefits of movement.

“It also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes prevention and the support available through programs such as Life!”

If you’re riding the event this year, consider fundraising for Diabetes Victoria to make a difference to the lives of Victorians living with or at risk of type 2 diabetes.

The money you raise will help support important education, information and support services, as well as research and prevention initiatives that aim to reduce the growing impact of the condition.
