RENOWNED engineer Romy Mayer has hailed Radburn Racing for taking the next step in facilitating ongoing female involvement in motorsport.
Mayer is known for her Supercars exploits at Triple Eight and then PremiAir Racing, but it’s in the Mustang Cup Australia arena that she has been most visible since the birth of her second child in April 2025.
Mayer was helping the all-female Radburn Racing team from afar before making an appearance at the Darwin round in July.
Now this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park, she’s been enabled the chance to up the ante on juggling racing with motherhood.
And she’s not the only one, with chief mechanic Tash Smith also in the same boat.
“We’re always promoting getting more women into motorsport… at one point comes the time where we start families and women still want to work in motorsport but it’s harder and harder to juggle it all,” Mayer told V8 Sleuth.
Clear As Mud! | The Undercut
THE Undercut returns, breaking down the latest news in the world of Supercars racing!
“So that’s been my dilemma, especially the last year now with two kids, that makes it not easy going away, it’s hard to manage.
“(Radburn Racing) reached out to me in the middle of the year. I was mentoring them a bit at QR and the first couple of rounds from home or between the rounds, just all the basic stuff like tyre pressures, managing the car, the sessions.
“Then my Mum was out from Germany, so she was home with my partner and both kids, and I was able to go to Darwin.
“Tash in Darwin already had her daughter there, he’s the same age as my son, and I was like ‘my son would actually love that too, especially if he has a friend here…’
“So I was able to bring him to Sydney and Imogen’s mum (Steph) is looking after them. When we’re still working longer in the evening or we come early in the morning to the track, she stays with them at the house and brings them a little bit later.
“They’re preparing lunch at home with her and then on the slushie machine at the track.
“It’s amazing that they give me and Tash the opportunity to bring the kids and have someone to look after them during the day while we do our work.
“It gives me the opportunity to come back to the racetrack.
“They’re kind of the first, Radburn Racing, to make the opportunity for mums to go racing again. The kids are having a good time and it’s good for us too, it’s peace of mind and we can do our job here.”
