The Edwardsville boys golf team finished third in a unique scoring format at the Dragon Classic.
Edwardsville shot 595 in the two-day, two-course tournament Sept. 18-19 in Pekin. Normal U-High won with a 590, followed by Dunlap at 594.
The 30-team tournament counted the top four front-nine scores and top four back-nine scores for each round’s team total. Edwardsville played at Pekin Country Club on Sept. 18 and Lick Creek Golf Course on Sept. 19.
The Tigers shot 297 at Pekin Country Club.
Their counting front-nine scores came from Brian Cooper (37), Michael Shaw (37), Bennett Briggs (39) and Luke Maxim (41). Their counting back-nine scores came from Shaw (34), Cooper (35), Maxim (36) and Drew Capron (38).
Edwardsville followed with a 298 at Lick Creek.
The Tigers counted front-nine scores from Shaw (35), Capron (36), Henry Willenborg (39) and Maxim (40), while Cooper (34), Maxim (36), Capron (39) and Willenborg (39) supplied the counting back-nine scores.
Using the traditional play-six, count-four format, Edwardsville finished second with a 603, behind Normal U-High’s 590. Dunlap was third at 606 and O’Fallon fourth at 607.
In the individual standings, Shaw tied for eighth at 3-over-par 147, Cooper tied for ninth at 4-over 148 and Maxim tied for 17th at 9-over 153.
Moline’s Isaac Rumbler shot a tournament-record 14-under 130 to earn medalist honors. Dunlap’s Nolan Eccles was second at 7-under 137.
